BM TRADA Q-Mark vs Fire Door Qualification

Understand the difference between an individual’s qualification and a company’s independent third-party certification before choosing your next step.

Individual competence and company certification are not the same thing

A Level 2 or Level 3 vocational qualification is awarded to an individual who meets the qualification requirements. FIRAS, BM TRADA Q-Mark and IFC Certification operate third-party certification schemes with their own scopes, audits and requirements. Completing a DB College qualification does not automatically make a learner or their employer FIRAS, BM TRADA Q-Mark or IFC certified.

Where does a fire door NVQ fit?

For an experienced installer, a work-based NVQ can provide formal evidence of the individual’s occupational competence. Third-party installer certification schemes may separately assess a company’s systems, procedures, workmanship and staff competence. Employers should check the exact requirements of the certification scheme they want to join.

FIRAS

FIRAS is a voluntary UKAS-accredited third-party installer certification scheme operated by Warringtonfire. FIRAS states that certification is held by the company rather than an individual installer. Its process includes company systems and site/workmanship assessment, together with competence assessment of supervisory and installation employees.

BM TRADA Q-Mark

BM TRADA operates Q-Mark third-party fire certification schemes. Its fire-door installation certification training is available as part of the Q-Mark fire door installation certification scheme. This is separate from obtaining an individual NVQ or other regulated qualification.

IFC Certification

IFC Certification operates installer certification schemes for fire protection systems including fire-resistant timber doors. IFC states that its process includes company office/site auditing and competence assessment of operatives and supervisors, and that installer certification is granted to the company rather than the individual.

Frequently asked questions

Does an NVQ make me FIRAS certified?

No. FIRAS certification is a separate third-party certification scheme held by a company. An individual NVQ and FIRAS company certification should not be described as interchangeable.

Does a DB College course give me BM TRADA Q-Mark certification?

No. Q-Mark certification has its own scheme requirements. DB College qualifications should be presented as individual qualification and competence routes, not as Q-Mark certification.

Does a Level 2 NVQ help demonstrate installer competence?

A relevant work-based NVQ can formally assess an individual’s occupational competence against its qualification requirements. A certification body or employer decides what evidence it accepts for its own scheme or project requirements.

Which route should I take first?

If you are an individual installer or inspector, start by checking which qualification matches your actual work. If your company wants third-party certification, contact the relevant certification body and confirm its current scheme requirements directly.
