Common questions
Before you enrol
Do I have to attend a college or training centre?
No. The qualification is completed on-site at your workplace. Your NVQ Assessor gathers evidence from the work you already do through direct observation, photo and video evidence, witness testimonies and professional discussions.
Is there a written exam?
No. There is no written exam. This is a work-based NVQ — you are assessed on the architectural metalwork installations you carry out on real projects, not on classroom tests.
What do I need to enrol?
The NVQ is designed for operatives already installing architectural metalwork — balustrades, handrails, staircases, walkways, steel trims, guards, grilles and similar components — on construction projects where your assessor can gather evidence of your work.
Does this get me the Blue CSCS Card?
Yes — once your NVQ is completed you can apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card. You’ll also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test as part of the CSCS application, and we’ll point you through both steps.
How does the 50/50 payment work?
