The 60-second answer

Which CSCS card
do you need?

Your card colour depends on your experience and your role on site — not on how long you’ve been in the industry. Pick the card that matches where you are, and we’ll show you the exact qualification that gets you there.

Starting out

Green Card — Labourer

  • You’re new to construction, or working as a labourer without a specific trade
  • You need your first card to get on site

How you get it: complete the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test, and apply to CSCS.

Skilled in your trade

Blue Card — Skilled Worker

  • You’re experienced in a trade — groundworks, plastering, roofing, ductwork, insulation, tiling and more
  • You can already do the job; you just don’t have the qualification that proves it

How you get it: complete a Level 2 NVQ in your trade — assessed remotely from the work you already do, no classroom, no exams — then pass the CITB test and apply to CSCS.

Two routes to Gold

Gold Card — Advanced Craft or Supervisor

  • Advanced Craft: you’re at the top of your trade — a Level 3 NVQ in your occupation (steel erecting, pipework, insulation and more) gets you the Advanced Craft Gold Card
  • Supervisor: you run gangs or supervise work on site — a supervision NVQ (Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision or Level 4 Site Supervision) gets you the Supervisor Gold Card
Not sure which Gold route fits? If your day is mostly on the tools, it’s Advanced Craft. If your day is mostly running other people’s work, it’s Supervisor.

Running the site

Black Card — Manager

  • You manage sites, projects or contracts — or you’re stepping up into that role
  • You want the card that opens every gate in UK construction

How you get it: complete a Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ in construction management — site management, senior construction management, or contracting operations management — then pass the CITB test and apply to CSCS.

Plant operators

Drive plant? Your route is CPCS / NPORS.

Forklift, dumper, excavator, telehandler, cranes and lifting operations run through the CPCS / NPORS scheme rather than a standard CSCS colour. The NVQs work the same way — assessed on the job while you keep earning.

Common questions

Before you choose

Do I need the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test for every card?

Yes — every CSCS card application requires a current CITB Health, Safety & Environment test at the right level for the card. Your NVQ comes first; we’ll point you to the test when your qualification is done.

Do I have to start at Green and work up?

No. Your card matches your competence, not your time served. If you’re already skilled in a trade, you can go straight for the Level 2 NVQ and the Blue card. If you already supervise or manage, you can start at the Gold or Black route.

Will I need to attend a college?

For the NVQs, no — assessment happens remotely at your workplace, from the work you already do. You keep earning throughout. Some short courses offer classroom options if you prefer.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes — most of our qualifications offer a 50/50 payment option: half when you enrol, half when you complete, with 0% interest and no credit check. Select it at checkout.
