Why this qualification

You already fix stone. This is the paperwork that says so.

Main contractors want a card. Cards want a qualification. This NVQ turns the work you do every week into a recognised Level 2 Diploma without taking you off site to do it.

01 — Card route

Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card

A Level 2 NVQ Diploma is the qualification the Blue Skilled Worker Card is built on. Once yours is awarded, you pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test and apply — we walk you through both steps.

02 — Grant funded

£600 back from CITB

A £600 CITB grant is available on achievement for CITB levy-registered employers, which brings the effective cost down to £90 per candidate. We supply the certification evidence for the claim.

03 — No lost days

Assessed at work

No classroom and no written exams. Your assessor comes to your live projects and observes the fixing you are already doing, and you carry on earning while you qualify.

04 — Regulated

ProQual, externally verified

The qualification is awarded by ProQual, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and every portfolio is subject to external verification. It is a real qualification, not a certificate of attendance.

05 — Experience counts

Built for working fixers

This is a competence qualification. Prior work counts as evidence where it can be verified, so experienced stone fixers usually complete faster than people expect.

06 — Teams

Squads and subcontractors

Put a whole gang through together. Site visits are arranged around your programme, and we can assess several candidates on the same visit.

What gets assessed

The work your assessor will watch you do

External stone fixing, assessed live on your own jobs. The list below is the kind of work that typically forms the evidence — your exact mandatory and optional units are confirmed on the scoping call, once we know what your sites give you access to.

On site

Setting out and levelling

Working from drawings and setting-out information, establishing lines and levels, and checking the work as it goes up.

On site

Fixing stone to the structure

Positioning and securing dressed stone and cladding units, working to the specified tolerances and finished appearance.

On site

Fixings, cramps and anchors

Selecting and installing the fixings, cramps and restraint anchors called for by the specification, and understanding why they are specified.

On site

Bedding, jointing and pointing

Preparing and using the correct mortars and jointing materials, and finishing joints to the standard the job requires.

On site

Handling, lifting and protection

Moving and storing stone safely, protecting finished faces, and keeping the work clean and undamaged through to handover.

Underpinning

Health, safety and working relationships

The safe working practices and communication requirements that sit behind every NVQ at this level, evidenced through the way you actually work.

How it works

Four steps, and you stay on the tools

Step 1

Scoping call

We check your experience and your current sites, confirm the route is right for you and agree the optional units.

Step 2

Enrolment & registration

You are registered with ProQual and given your assessor. Initial assessment is done remotely — no time off site.

Step 3

On-site assessment

Your assessor visits your live jobs, observes the fixing work and records the evidence. You keep working throughout.

Step 4

Certification & card

ProQual issues the certificate on achievement. We then guide you through the CITB test and the Blue CSCS Card application, and provide the evidence for your employer’s £600 CITB grant claim.

The price

£690 — or £90 if your employer is levy-registered

One fee, everything included: registration, assessment, site visits and certification.

ProQual Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Stonemasonry — External Stone Fixing

Course fee payable to DB College. CITB grant reclaimed by the employer on achievement.

£690 course fee £600 CITB grant = £90 effective cost
  • ProQual registration and certification included
  • Assessor visits to your own sites included
  • Guidance through the CITB test and the Blue CSCS Card application
  • Split the fee 50/50 — £345 to start and £345 on completion, where the payment plan is offered at checkout

CITB grant note: the £600 grant is paid by CITB directly to CITB levy-registered employers once the candidate achieves the qualification. DB College will support your claim with the certification evidence required. Grant eligibility, rates and payment remain subject to CITB’s own rules and your levy registration status. The £690 course fee is payable to DB College in the normal way; the grant is reclaimed by the employer afterwards. If you are self-employed and not covered by a levy-registered employer, the £690 fee stands as listed.

Common questions

Before you book

Do I pay £690 or £90?

You pay £690 to DB College. The £600 CITB grant is paid by CITB directly to the levy-registered employer once the qualification is achieved, which brings the effective cost down to £90. If nobody claims the grant, the fee is simply £690.

Is there a classroom or an exam?

No. This is a competence-based NVQ, assessed on site while you work. There is no classroom attendance and no written examination — the evidence comes from the stone fixing you are already doing.

Does it get me a Blue CSCS Card?

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma is the qualification the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card is based on. Once it is awarded you pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test and apply to CSCS. We guide you through both steps, but the card itself is issued by CSCS, not by us.

How much experience do I need?

You need to be working in external stone fixing now, with access to the kind of work the qualification covers. We check this on the scoping call before you pay anything — if your current sites will not give you the evidence, we will tell you straight away.

Where does the assessment happen?

On your own sites, wherever they are in the UK. Our assessors travel to you, so you do not lose days travelling to a centre.

Can I put a whole team through?

Yes. Group and subcontractor bookings are straightforward and we can assess several candidates on the same site visit. Tell us how many people you have and we will scope it on the call.

Can I pay in two parts?

Where the 50/50 payment plan is offered at checkout you can pay £345 to start and the remaining £345 on completion. If you cannot see the option, ring us and we will set it up for you.

Next step

Get qualified without leaving the site
