Thermal Insulation · TICA Card Scheme
Two red cards.
One route to Blue Skilled Worker.
The TICA red card is how insulation operatives stay on site while they qualify. Which one you apply for depends on your onsite work history, not on your ability. This Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation is the qualification both cards are built around, assessed remotely at your workplace.

Choose your route
There are two types of red card you can apply for
Both are temporary cards. Both require you to be registered and actively working on a Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation. The difference is how much verifiable onsite work history you already have behind you.
TICA Trainee Worker Card

What you must provide
- Evidence that you are registered for and actively undertaking a Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation
- Verifiable proof of relevant work history
- Work history confirmed by your current or previous employer(s), and/or data from a valid Green Labourer card
Then
- Complete the S/NVQ
- Pass the TICA two-day Practical Skills Assessment
- Evidence four years’ onsite experience
TICA Experienced Worker Card
Experienced operatives who have not completed a S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation or a TICA apprenticeship, and who have 4 or more years of verifiable onsite work history.
What you must provide
- Proof that you are registered for and actively undertaking a Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation
- Proof of relevant work history
- Work history confirmed by your current or previous employer(s), and/or data from a valid CSCS / Skill Card

The full journey
From red card to blue card
Both red cards run through the same middle. Only the starting point and the final evidence differ.
Register on the NVQ
You enrol on the Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation and we confirm your registration in writing.
Apply for your red card
Trainee or Experienced, depending on your verifiable onsite history, with your safety certificates in place.
Build your portfolio
Your assessor gathers evidence remotely from the work you already do, with site visits kept to a minimum.
Two-day PSA
After the S/NVQ is signed off, you attend the TICA Practical Skills Assessment.
Blue Skilled Worker Card
You become eligible to apply. Trainee card holders also evidence four years’ onsite experience.
How we deliver it
The Level 2 S/NVQ, assessed around your work
You stay on the tools
Evidence is collected from the jobs you are already doing. Photos, site records and video calls do most of the work, so you are not pulled off site for classroom weeks.
An assessor who answers
You are given a named assessor and a clear plan from day one. We chase the paperwork, arrange the sign-offs and keep your employer updated on progress.
Asbestos Awareness at no cost
Every learner who qualifies with us receives Asbestos Awareness free of charge, so one of the two card requirements is handled before you apply.
Common questions
Before you apply
Can I renew my red card when it expires?
No. Neither red card can be renewed. The Trainee card runs for 4 years and the Experienced card runs for 1 year, and both are issued once. The card is there to keep you working while you qualify, so the qualification needs to be finished inside that window.
Which card do I apply for if I am close to 4 years on site?
It depends on what you can verify, not on what you have worked in total. If your employer or a valid CSCS / Skill Card can confirm four years or more, the Experienced Worker Card applies. If not, the Trainee Worker Card is the right route. Speak to us first and we will look at your evidence with you.
Do I need the NVQ before applying for the red card?
No, but you must already be registered and actively working on the Level 2 S/NVQ in Thermal Insulation. Proof of registration is part of the application, which is why most operatives enrol first and then apply.
What is the Practical Skills Assessment?
A two-day assessment run by TICA, taken after your S/NVQ is complete. It has to be passed before you can apply for the Blue Skilled Worker Card.
My Asbestos Awareness certificate is more than 2 years old.
It will need to be retaken. If you qualify with us it is provided free of charge. If you are arranging it yourself, TICA offer the course for £15.
Next step
Not sure which red card applies to you?
Tell us your years on site, your current card and your safety certificates, and we will confirm the right route before you enrol.
