The Green CSCS Labourer Card is the first card most people get — it is how you get on site. If you are new to construction, or working as a general labourer without a specific trade, this is your starting point.

To qualify you need the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. It is a short, straightforward qualification covering the essentials: hazard awareness, safe working practices, personal protective equipment, manual handling, working at height, and your responsibilities under health and safety law.

How the Green Card route works: complete the Level 1 Award, pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Operatives, then apply to CSCS. There are no entry requirements and no prior experience needed — this course is designed for people starting out.

Many people begin here and move up. Once you have site experience in a particular trade, a Level 2 NVQ takes you to the Blue Skilled Worker Card, and the Level 3 and Level 6 routes lead to Gold and Black. You do not have to work through every card in order — your card matches your competence, not your time served.

Not sure where you fit? Read our guide to which CSCS card you need, or call 01707 502 775 and we will point you to the right course.
