Two names, the same job
On site you are called a pipefitter. On the JIB-PMES card the occupation is shown as pipework installer. It is the same trade and the same work — nothing changes in what you do on site or what you are assessed on.

The name contractors, agencies and job adverts use for the trade.

The occupation shown on your JIB Blue PMES card once you hold the qualification and pass the CITB test.

What is the JIB Blue PMES card for pipework installer?
It is the industry-recognised competence card for skilled mechanical pipefitters working on plumbing, heating, sprinkler and engineering pipework. It is issued through JIB-PMES once you hold a relevant Level 2 qualification and have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. It is not a CSCS card — JIB-PMES is the scheme that covers mechanical services.
Is a pipework installer the same as a pipefitter?
Yes. Pipefitter is the name used on site and in job adverts. Pipework installer is how the occupation is shown on the JIB-PMES card. The work is the same — marking out, shaping, assembling and installing pipework — and so is what you are assessed on.
What is the difference between the three routes?
Every route delivers the same full Level 2 Diploma and the same JIB Blue card route. Route One at £800 covers the eight mandatory units. Route Two at £1,000 adds unit J/652/1647 for mechanical fire protection and sprinklers. Route Three at £1,200 adds unit H/652/1646 for welding on top of that.
Does this cover fire sprinkler work?
Only if you take the fire sprinkler unit. Sprinkler competence is recorded through unit J/652/1647, which is included in Routes Two and Three. If you take Route One, your certificate will not show sprinkler installation, so choose Route Two or Three if that work needs to be on it.
How long does the qualification take?
Most people complete the portfolio in 8 to 12 weeks and some clear it in six. There are no exams and no classroom — evidence is gathered from your live site work and assessed remotely by a qualified assessor. Your certificate follows within four weeks of sign-off.
What evidence do I need to provide?
Photos and short videos of you doing the work, copies of method statements and risk assessments, site reports, work trackers and job specifications, plus a recorded professional discussion with your assessor. Everything is uploaded as you go, so nothing has to be gathered retrospectively.
Will my employer’s CITB levy fund this?
If your employer is CITB-registered and levy-paying, they can claim a CITB achievement grant for each completed qualification. We provide the qualification number and all the paperwork the claim needs. Grant eligibility and rates are set by CITB, not by us.
Can I add a unit later?
Yes. If you start on Route One and later want fire sprinklers or welding on your certificate, you can upgrade during your registration period by paying the £200 difference per optional unit. Tell your assessor and we will set it up.
Do I need any qualifications to start?

Your next step
Move up to Level 3 when you are ready
This Level 2 Diploma covers supporting the installation of pipework. Many skilled pipefitter roles ask for Level 3. Once you have your Level 2, the Level 3 Diploma in the Installation of Pipework Components in Construction is the next step — assessed the same way, on your own sites.
