Black card

The Black CSCS Manager Card is the senior card in UK construction — and the one that opens every gate. It is for people who manage sites, projects or contracts, or who are stepping up into that role.

To qualify you need a Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ in construction management. The qualifications on this page cover construction site management, senior construction management, construction contracting operations management, senior site inspection, occupational health and safety practice, strategic management and leadership, construction project management, and environmental and sustainability management — plus SMSTS at Level 6.

Every one of them is assessed at your workplace, around the job you are already doing. There is no classroom attendance and no written exams. Your assessor builds the portfolio from your real projects: site records, programmes, risk assessments, meeting notes, professional discussions and workplace observations. Most candidates complete within a few months.

How the Black Card route works: complete your Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ, pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Managers and Professionals, then apply to CSCS. There are no formal academic entry requirements — these are competence-based qualifications, so what counts is the responsibility you already hold.

Several of these qualifications also support progression towards Chartered Manager status and professional body membership.

Most courses offer a 50/50 payment option: half when you enrol, half when you complete, at 0% interest with no credit check.
