  • Understand the fire science behind passive fire protection
  • Read test evidence, classifications and manufacturer standard details
  • Carry out defensible inspections that stand up to audit
  • Produce traceable defect logs and clear remedial specifications

Course Content

Block 1 — Fire Science & Compartmentation Principles
The engineering physics behind passive fire protection — why fire spreads, how barriers are rated, and what makes a penetration seal succeed or fail under heat.

  • How heat moves and how fire spreads
  • Compartmentation and the role of fire stopping
  • Thermal loading curves
  • The R, E and I criteria
  • Video: Anatomy of a Breach — the physics of fire stopping
    04:16
  • Video: Fire Compartmentation

  • Block 1 Knowledge Check — Fire Science & Compartmentation

Block 2 — The Regulatory Landscape & Compliance Frameworks
The legal duties behind fire stopping — the Building Safety Act, the Golden Thread, Approved Document B, Regulation 38 handovers, and third-party certification.

Block 3 — Material Groupings, Configurations & Lab Testing
The material science and test standards behind fire stopping — how sealants and batts work, why mixing brands invalidates a certificate, and the standards that prove performance.

Block 4 — Inspection Protocols, Auditing & Defect Logging
The working tools of an independent inspector — pre-site audits, the balance of visual, non-destructive and invasive checks, and defensible reporting that stands up legally.
