The SMSTS part, in CITB’s own terms
Five days, 37.5 hours, valid for five years
SMSTS is the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme, endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for construction managers. The course runs for five days totalling 37.5 hours, and the certificate is valid for five years — renewed before it expires with the two-day SMSTS Refresher, or you sit the full course again.

Before you enrol
How is the course delivered — do I have to stop working?
No. The SMSTS element is delivered through structured training sessions, while the NVQ Level 6 is completed through workplace assessment and portfolio evidence gathered from your normal management work — so you keep working and earning throughout.
Do I need any qualifications to start?
There are no formal academic entry requirements. You should be aged 18 or over, working in a site management or supervisory position, have construction industry experience, a basic understanding of English and a workplace where evidence can be collected.
How long does it take?

Does this get me the Black CSCS Card?
