NVQ Level 6 and SMSTS are not the same qualification

SMSTS is a site management safety training course. A Level 6 Construction Site Management NVQ is a competence-based vocational qualification that assesses how you perform your management role in the workplace.

Can SMSTS get me a Black CSCS Card?

SMSTS on its own is not accepted by CSCS as the qualification for a Manager Card. CSCS requires an appropriate Construction Management/Technical NVQ or SVQ (or another accepted route for the relevant card), together with the required health, safety and environment test.

What does the Level 6 NVQ assess?

The Level 6 route assesses real management competence: planning work, managing people and resources, monitoring projects, health and safety, environmental requirements, work methods and other responsibilities relevant to the chosen pathway.

Which should I take?

They serve different purposes and many managers hold both. If your objective is a CSCS Manager Card, check the qualification required for your exact occupation rather than assuming SMSTS replaces the NVQ.

DB College helps experienced construction managers gain recognised work-based qualifications while continuing in their current role.
